EFE students and families,
I want to start by personally thanking all of you that were able to join us for our Fun Fest. I hope that you enjoyed the many changes that we made this school year. I too saw many of our students at the football game cheering on our very own Spoofhounds! Thank you to MHS for allowing our students free admittance to the game. In addition, a huge thank you needs to be given to Matt and Brenda Johnson, who are co-chairing as PTO presidents with our very own Brian Lynn. They all played an integral part in the preparation and success of this event!!! If you too are ever looking for other ways to get involved, please don’t hesitate to contact our school office or one of our PTO presidents. There are always many opportunities to get involved and volunteer.
I would like to share that this year, your child will continue to monitor his/her learning through the use of a data notebook. Many of you are familiar with this process as we began this adventure last year. The purpose of the notebook is an interactive tool that enables our students to set goals and track their progress. In addition, it is a way to communicate to you how your child is progressing, as well as offering an opportunity for you to work with your child on possible areas that need improvement. As children bring this home throughout the school year, we ask that you take time with your child to review the notebook and discuss your child’s progress. We have a fantastic group of kids this year. I have been very excited to see their excitement and enthusiasm as they are learning new things each and every day to showcase!
Our staff and students are also looking forward to 1st Quarter conferences that are coming up this month. I want to share with you some changes that you will see in 1st-4th grade student conferences this year. Your child will be taking the lead at his/her conference this year as we transition to student led conferences. The purpose of a student led conference is to help our students take responsibility and ownership for their learning. Your child will share some of their work, summarize their accomplishments, and further explain their plans and goals as we continue the year. We hope you are looking forward to this opportunity to learn more about your child’s progress. Our kindergarteners will have a traditional conference this fall, but also will have a student led conference with our other grade levels in the spring. Please look for information to be coming home soon to schedule a time that works best for you!
A well-rounded education requires everyone getting involved in student learning. Whether it be conferences, volunteering, ensuring your child is well-rested and prepared for school, or going over homework; all efforts help support our students’ success. Therefore, I want to continue to thank you for all your efforts and the support you provide your children every day. I too would like to extend one more opportunity to get involved. Our 1st quarter Principal’s Coffee will be Thursday, October 9th from 7:30-8:00. This is a perfect opportunity to informally come visit with myself and Mr. Lynn about any areas of concern you may have, share your suggestions, or just visit with other EFE parents. We will be meeting in our conference room this year. Please mark your calendars!
This year, we will be doing a school fundraiser through PTO to raise money for some projects and equipment at EFES. This fundraiser is completely voluntary, and any student or family that wishes to participate is welcome to do so. Packets will be coming home with your child on Friday, explaining the fundraiser. Students are encouraged NOT TO GO DOOR-TO-DOOR, in accordance with our board policy.
The proceeds from this fundraiser will support the following PTO fundraising goals:
1. Increasing the amount of iPads that our classroom teachers have available for our student use.
2. Raising funds for a long-term project of resurfacing our playgrounds with rubber surfacing.
3. PTO Yearly Budget Items (student field trip funds, Fun Fest, Teacher Grants for classroom supplies and equipment, etc.)

PTO Teacher Appreciation
Happy October! We are super excited to get started with Teacher Appreciation this year. We have several ideas floating around to let them know just how special they really are. I am Sarah Ware and along with Tracy Jones we will be fronting this committee. With parent-teacher conferences coming up in just a few weeks, we are looking at ideas to provide meals on the late nights. We are hoping to have a short meeting following the next PTO meeting. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to volunteer groceries, time cooking, or anything at all.

In the art and music room, Eugene Field students joined over a million children and adults around the globe to celebrate International Dot Day – a grass roots “creativity & courage” movement, started in 2009 by a teacher in Iowa. Inspired by New York Times best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds’ classic “storybook for all ages” The Dot, International Dot Day inspires young and old to embrace the power of personal creativity to change the world.
In the music room, we also celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Friday, September 19.

Our 3rd and 4th graders kicked off September learning fitness games to take outside and get active. Next, we brought out the parachute and practiced for our “Personal Best Day” Fitnessgram assessment. We ended off the month with an introduction to Frisbees and a little more preparation for the Fitnessgram.
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd students are exploring with how to move the body to use different manipulative objects from playground balls to scarves. The kids also enjoyed a little scooter time, parachute activities and even learned some new recess games.
Jump Rope for Heart is coming up to benefit the American Heart Association and bring some new equipment to our gym! The AHA could not continue their life saving mission against heart disease and childhood obesity without families like yours. The students truly love this very optional program and the funds they raise are a true reflection of their kindness and this community’s generosity.
